Abstract

215,294. Guiard, A. J. J., and Pernet, J. L. Dec. 30, 1922. Force-feed lubricating; filtering lubricant. - In a crank casing for internal-combustion engines or the like in which the, crank-shaft bearings are mounted in removable supports, the crank casing and the movable supports are formed with intercommunicating oil passages for the supply of oil to the bearings. A rotary gear pump 19 housed in one of the removable supports 16, which is secured in its housing 5 by a screwed spindle 18, draws oil from a sump 3 through passages 10, 11, 20 and delivers it through a passage 21 to the bearing 17 and to a longitudinal duct 9 in the crank case, whence the oil passes to the other bearing by a passage formed in its support. The pressure is regulated by an adjustable relief-valve 27, Fig. 4, controlling a port 29 in the back plate 24 of the pump. A, lever 26 pivoted on the back plate 24 is pressed against the valve 27 by the stem 30 of a plunger 31 acted on by a spring 33 which bears against a second plunger 34 bearing against the lower end of a lever 35 pivoted on a pin 36 mounted on the support 16. The upper end of the lever 35 bears against a plunger 38 acted on by a spring 40 mounted in a holder 41 secured to the housing 5, the spring 40 being stronger than the spring 33. Adjustment is effected. by a screw 42 mounted in the end cover 1<a>. A hand pump 44 mounted on the outside of the crank case is connected to the vertical oil passage 11 between two non-return valves 46, 47. By means of the pump 44 the oil passages and the pump 19 may be primed and kept flooded with oil. Removable filters 50 comprising perforated tubes closed at one end 51 and covered with wire gauze are fitted in openings 3a in the bottom of the sump 3, their open ends fitting into perforations 4<a> in a partition 4 separating the sump from the crank case. Holes are provided near the edges of the supports 16 to permit oil collecting in front of the supports to return to the sump.
