Abstract

320,791. Douglas Motors, Ltd., and Dixon, F. W. Nov. 5, 1928. Force-feed lubricating. - In an internal-combustion engine wherein a separate lubricant tank 5 is removably bolted to the underside of the crank case 3, a pump unit 13 screwed into the bottom of the tank extends therethrough and into the timing casing 10, where a driving connection is established, the arrangement being such that the pump unit is independently removable. The pump rotor 19 is mounted at the lower end of a spindle 21 extending through the body 13 and provided at its upper end with a worm wheel 23 adapted, when the tank is in position, to engage a worm 24 mounted on the shaft of one of the timing pinions, the diameter of the wheel 23 being such as to allow it to pass through the apertures in the casing 10 and tank when the pump is to be removed. Lubricant passes from the tank, which is provided with cooling pins 8, to the inlet passage 26 of the pump through a strainer 38 encircling the pump body, and is discharged through an outlet 27, a conduit 28 in a pillar 29 in the tank, a passage 30 in the timing case cover 42, and a running connection 32 to passages in the crankshaft 31. Excess oil returns from the crank case to the tank through holes 33 and a strainer 34. The timing gear is lubricated by oil vapour passing through a port 35, oil being allowed to collect in the casing 10 to the level of an overflow hole 36.
