Abstract

216,875. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Ross, A. A.). May 28, 1923, [Convention date]. Force-feed lubricating; straining and cooling lubricant.-A gear pump 27 geared to the lowspeed gear wheel 18 of a double-reduction gearing is mounted on and has its suction side communicating directly with a chamber 26 in the casing 10, which chamber 26 is submerged in lubricant contained in the casing and communicates with the casing through an opening 32 fitted with a strainer 33. The pump delivers the lubricant through a pipe 34, a passage 35 inside the chamber 26, an opening 36 in the end wall of the casing and a passage 37 in a removable plate 39. to a conduit 38 at the bottom of the casing. From the conduit 38 the lubricant passes by pipes 41 to conduits 42. Passages 43 lead from the conduits 42 to the bearings in the end walls, and pipes 44, fitted with sight-glasses 52, lead to spoon oilers 45 for lubricating the gear teeth. One of the pipes 41 is connected to the detachable plata 39, while the other pipe 41 is connected to the conduit 38 bv a removable plate 48 having a passage 49. A by-pass 48<a> in the plate 48 is fitted with a spring-pressed relief valve 48b, Fig. 4a and returns excess oil to the casing 10. A pipe 51 leads lubricant from the conduit 38 to the intermediate bearings. Oil thrown upwards from the gear wheels is cooled on a coil 56 secured to the underside of the cover 11 of the casing 10, through which coil water is circulated. The application to a single-reduction gear casing is also described. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 186,587.
