Lubricant conveyed by mechanical means; liquid level, maintaining.-In gearing wherein the bearings are lubricated by lubricant splashed from a reservoir, an auxiliary reservoir at a higher level than the main reservoir is provided to collect lubricant splashed from the latter, the bottom of the auxiliary reservoir communicating with the main reservoir so that, in operation, a constant level is maintained in the main reservoir, below that in the auxiliary reservoir. A pinion 8 on a shaft 9 mounted in bearings 11, 12 meshes with a gear wheel 5 on a shaft 4 mounted in roller bearings 6, 7, the whole being enclosed in a casing 13 having a lubricant reservoir 15. The auxiliary reservoir is formed in the casing by a baffle plate 45 adjacent the wheel 5, and communicates with the main reservoir 15 through an opening 46. The auxiliary reservoir is provided with a sediment drain 47 and with a valved pipe 48 by which it can be ascertained if there is sufficient lubricant in the auxiliary reservoir. Lubricant splashed in the casing is led to the bearings 6, 7 through channels 35, 33 and passes thence to the upper and lower reservoirs. The lubricant also supplies wells 42 from which it is fed to the bearings 11, 12 by rings 41. The wells 42 have overflow openings 43.
