514,248. Gear casings. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AKT.-GES. May 25, 1939, No. 15601. Convention date. May 30, 1938 [Class 79 (iii)] In a motor-vehicle gear casing 1, a trough 2 surrounds substantially the lower half of the gears &c. elements 3, the spaces between the trough and the side walls of the casing forming a sump for lubricating oil which is fed to the gears by a pump 9 and overflows from the trough. The longitudinal profile of the trough may be rectilinear or stepped &c. to conform to gears &c. of different diameters. The edges 4 may be shaped to facilitate the overflow to the sump and oil-scrapers 12 may be provided. The side walls 5 of the casing may be bulged and provided with covering ribs 6. The bottom 7 may be inclined and provide with a drain plug 8.
