Abstract
205,924. Payne, A. E. H. Aug. 8, 1922. Addition to 193,574. Cranks; crank linkages.-Comprises a modification of the crank mechanism set forth in the parent Specification, adapted to increase the arc of crank effectiveness in power or other drives. The crank arm D is pivoted at E within a recess or the like C formed in a main disc cr plate A carried by a shaft B rotatably mounted in bearings, the pivot E being eccentric to the shaft B. The arrangement is such that if, for example, the crank-pin F is connected through a link G to a driving member reciprocating between the limits H - - H<3>. the disc is directly rotated by engagement of the arm D with the forward wall of the recess C except at each end of the reciprocatory stroke, when the disc momentarily overtakes the arm D owing to the eccentric displacement of the pivot E. Thus at one end of the stroke the disc moves in advance of the crank arm between the positions F<2>, F<3>, the crank arm subsequently overtaking the disc between the positions F<3>, F<4>. To retain the arm D in the recess, the outer end thereof may be formed with an overhanging lug or lip engaging the back of the disc. Two such crank devices may be provided for use on a bicycle or a machine driven by foot power. Instead of the recess C a rooking space of any convenient form may be provided on the disc A.
