Abstract

Self-driving machines. - In a self-driving machine a beam is caused to oscillate by transferring a weight from one side of the fulcrum to the other by means of the rotary motion which is derived from the oscillatory motion of the beam. The beam 1 its fulcrumed on a shaft 2 and carries at one end a lever 4 the movement of which causes, by links 7, 8, a lever 9, pivoted on the beam at 10, to transfer the weight 22 from one side of the fulcrum 2 to the other by means of rollers 11, 12, cam levers 15, 16 and links 20, 21. The oscillatory movement of the beam 1 is transformed into rotary motion of the shaft 31 by means of pawls 24, ratchet wheel 23 and sprocket wheels 28, 30 with chain 29. A lever 33 mounted on the shaft 31 is provided with rollers 34, 35 which act on the bell-crank lever 54 which, through various linkages, oscillates the lever rod 81. Towards the end of the down-stroke the lever 4 is turned to transfer the weight 22 to the other side of the fulcrum, the catch rod 6 and a pin 84. The lever 45 is reversed towards the end of the up-stroke by the lever rod 81 and the flexible connection 5. The reversal of the direction of motion of the beam is assisted by links 38, 39 pivoted to the beam, the links being operated by levers 49, 51 which are engaged by a pin on the roller 35.
