Description

A. P. GRELL. MECHANICAL MOVEMENT. APPLICATION rum) AUG.13, 1908.
Patented June 22, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT @FFTQE.
ALBERT P. ORELL, OF IONIA, MICHIGAN.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT P. CRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ionia, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mechanical movements or reversing mechanism designed, primarily, for use upon washing machines, and its object is to provide a reversing mechanism with which an oscillating movement may be converted into arotary motion and said rotary motion re-converted into an oscillating motion to transmit an alternating movement to a revoluble shaft, and at the same time to store sufficient motive power to carry the mechanism safely by all dead centers, and to provide a means whereby the reversing element in the construction will .be held, at all times, in close contact with the driving gear. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the construction of this mechanical movement I provide a base A designed to support the entire working mechanism of the movement. A lug a, boXesf and an arm H are formed integral with this base. A shaft F is journaled in the boxes f and has a large gear wheel J mounted on one end, and a small gear wheel Gr mounted on the other end, the said shaft being made to revolve by means of the lever H, which is fulcrumed upon the arm H and has an angled arm h projecting downward from the fulcrum point to position to pivotally receive the end of the connecting rod I, as at t the other end of said connecting rod being pivotally secured to the surface of the gear wheel J so that when the lever H is made to oscillate upon its fulcrum on the arm H the gear wheel J will be made to revolve regularly, thus converting the oscillating motion of the lever H into a rotary motion in the shaft F and the gear wheels J and G. To again convert the rotary motion to an oscillating motion and said oscillating motion to an alternating rotary motion I fulcrum a segment B to the base A, as at b, and pivotally secure a lever D thereto, as at d d,

so that said lever may have an oscillating vertical motion, as indicated in Fig. 2 at the same time that it is made to oscillate sidewise by the action of the gear wheel Gupon the fingers d on the lever D. Thus, we will presume that the shaft F is revolving in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3. This, through the action of the gear wheel G, would cause the lever D to move in the direction of the arrow 1 and the segment B to move in the direction of the arrow 2 until the lever D has passed to position so that the gear wheel G engages the finger 01 when the lever will be carried down to the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the motion of both the lever and the segment will be reversed thus causing the gear teeth B to revolve the gear wheel C alternately in one direction and then in the other thus imparting to the matrix M, or any other driven machinery, a corresponding alternating movement.
The guide E is secured to the base A, as at e e, and is made of a proper form to hold the fingers d cl and those between them, in constant and unbroken contact with the gear wheel G when passing over, or up or down at the sides of the gear Wheel. This is a very essential element in this invention as, without its use, the lever D would become inoperative when passing over the gear wheel G by reason of being thrown out of engagement with the gear teeth thereon.
The gear wheel K, which meshes with, and is made to revolve by the gear wheel J, and the fly wheel L act a double purpose. First,
to carry the gear wheel J safely over the dead centers of the crank pin i, and, second, to receive and retain momentum from the gear wheel J sufficient to store power for pro pelling the mechanism some time after force has been removed from the lever H.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
The combination in a mechanical movement, of a base having an arm, boxes and a bearing thereon, a shaft journaled in the boxes, a large gear wheel on one end of the shaft, a crank on said gear wheel, a lever fulcrumed to the arm, a connecting rod connecting said lever and the crank, a segment pivotally connected with the bed and having gear teeth on one end, a lever pivoted at one end to the segment and the other'end provided with fingers, a gear wheel on the shaft in position to engage the fingers and cause i to revolve by the gear Wheel that carries the the lever to oscillate sidewise and be carried crank. 10 above and below the gear Wheel, a guard for Signed at Ionia Michigan August 10th holding the lever to position so that the fin- 1908.
