Wedging or jamming.- In a sluice valve having means for wedging the valve on its seat, the disc or discs are provided with inclined faces on the back, mounted on resilient members, which engage the rollers carried by bolts which hold the valve casing together. Alternatively, the rollers may be carried by the discs and the inclined faces by the bolts. The disc A, Fig. 1, is provided with rollers B fixed to the extremities of a flexible member F, and running on bolts G which also secure the two parts of the casing together. Inclined surfaces H are formed on the bolts to press the disc against its seating. In a modification, Fig. 3, recesses K are formed on the bolts G, opposite the inclined face H, engaging with projections L carried by the disc, so that the disc is positively lifted off its seating at the beginning of the opening movement. A knife edge E may be formed on the disc or the seating to scrape the closure surfaces clean. The valve may be operated by a screw, rack and pinion, piston, or by hand.
