Abstract

Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-In a steam pump governor in which the steam supply is controlled by a valve operated by a piston to which fluid under pressure is suppled under the control of a valve co-operating with a flexible diaphragm &c. the piston is located within a cylinder enclosed in an outer casing secured to the valve body, the valve or valves controlling the fluid supply to the operating piston being secured in the upper part of the casing. As shown, a steam throttle-valve 6 is connected by its stem to a piston 9 mounted in a cage or chamber 11 having a. flange 12 by which it is bolted to the steamvalve casing and to a casing 13 enclosing the cage 11 and connecting the steam-valve casing with the pressure heads 14, 15. These pressure heads contain springs 24 which press upon diaphragms 19, 21 forming the covers of chambers 17, 18 in the casing 13. The spring pressure is adjusted by nuts 25 and screws stems 26 having clamping nut 27. The nuts 25 and the sections of the pressure heads are lobe-shaped to prevent rotation of the nuts, as shown in Fig. 2. The diaphragms are secured by rings 20, 22, and press on the tops of valves 30 mounted in cages 29 and controlling the flow of air from pipes 35, 36 connected with the main reservoir and the brake valve respectively to the space above the piston 9. The interior of the pressure head 14 is connected by a pipe 37 to the feed-valve pipe, the head 14 controlling the air supply to the piston 9 in certain positions of the driver's brake valve.
