Abstract

247,973. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Holt, K. M.). Feb. 19, 1925, [Convention date]. Regulating.-A back-pressure turbine 11 having a nozzle plate 10 and an inlet duct 31, 9 8 for normal working is provided with an additional nozzle plate 23 to which steam is automatically admitted under abnormal conditions, such as excessive back pressure in the exhaust chamber. The inlet duct 25 leading to the additional nozzles is arranged to branch from the main inlet 21 on the turbine side of the usual throttle valve 17 and emergency valve 20, and is provided with a valve 26 actuated by a pressure-responsive diaphragm 48 through a pilot valve 45 controlling pressure oil above a piston 37 fixed to the stem of the valve 26. The space above the diaphragm is connected to the exhaust casing of the turbine, while the piston 37 is subjected to the upward thrust of a spring 41. By this means excessive exhaust pressure opens the valve 26 and admits steam to the additional nozzles. A second auxiliary nozzle plate may be provided and controlled in the same manner.
