Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A valve comprises an inlet 24 and outlet 28 communicating through an aperture, a main valve 13 biased by a spring 10 to close the aperture and fixed to a piston 11 in a cylinder 25, the cylinder being normally in communication with the inlet when the valve is closed via aperture 21 in a casing, aperture 6 in a pilot valve 7, and an axial bore in a tubular stem 5, and a normally closed operating valve 20 which when opened moves a diaphragm 4 and valve 7 to connect the cylinder 25 to the outlet via aperture 21, chamber 26, and passage 23, and close off the connection of the cylinder with the inlet. Tubular stem 5 is slideable in the main closure 13 and a chamber 27 is connected with the inlet via the bore in the stem 5, and chamber 26 is connected with the inlet via the bore and a small aperture 22. When the valve 13 is closed, pressure in the chambers 26, 27 is equal and the main valve is closed by the spring 10. When operating valve 20 is opened, fluid escapes from the chamber 26 quicker than it can enter via aperture 22 and the diaphragm 4 moves valve 7 to close the connection 21 between cylinder 25 and the inlet, and opens the cylinder to the chamber 26 and outlet 28, to allow main valve 13 to be opened by inlet pressure. When the valve 20 is closed, pressures in chamber 26 and cylinder 25 is restored through aperture 22, so that valve 13 is closed. The valve 20 can be operated remotely via a solenoid, flexible cable, or fluid motor, or by a float which can be connected to it by mechanical, electrical or fluid-pressure means. The valve 20 can be actuated response to outlet pressure.
