Abstract
198,108. Tourtel, J. M., and Johnston, L. March 9, 1922. Lock mechanism, master-key; tumbler-type.- Tumbler locks are constructed for use with a master key by forming some or all of the tumblers with two operating edges in their thickness, one for co-operation with the master-key and the other with the servant key. The second edge is made by cutting away part of the thickness of the tumblers. Fig. 2 shows a bolt A locked by a gated tumbler D<2> having one edge operable by a servant-key, and another edge, shown shaded, operable by a master-key. Fig. 5 shows tumblers P, Q, R, S, each with an integral part p, q, r, s, providing a second operating edge. The tumblers are operated directly by the bits of a servant-key F<2> and indirectly by the bits of a master-key F<1> acting on the parts p, q, r, s. By having tumblers with edges of different depth, 'but each with a second edge of the same depth, a number of locks with individual keys but all operable by one master-key may be made.
