PIN TUMBLER LOCK. APPLICATION FILED SEPT.2, 1921.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIE.
I PETER E. AUGENIBRA'UN. OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE 6c TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
PIN-TUMBLER LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1922.
Application filed September 2, 1921. Serial No. 497,898.
To all whom 2'25 may concern. 7 Be it known that 1, PETER F. AUGEN- BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in locks of the pin tumbler type wherein a plug which actuates the locking mechanism is mounted to turn in a cylinder, the object of my present invention being to. provide both the cylinder and the plug with simple and easily applied means which shall act as armor to prevent access to the tumblers and their drivers by a boring tool. .lVith this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing a portion of a lock embodying my improvements. Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a view showing a lock plug having the armor applled thereto. Figure 4 is a detail view of an armor for the plug, and Figure 5 is a view of a modification.
A look cylinder is represented at 1 and provided at one end with a face plate 2. said cylinder having therein a row of bores 3 for the reception ofspring pressed drivers (not shown), as is common in this type of locks. The cylinder 1 receives the plug 4 having a row of bores 5 to receive pin tumblers (not shown) and at its front end, said plug is provided with a flange 6 seated in a recess 7 in the cylinder near the outer face thereof so that the front end of said plug will lie flush with the front of the face plate 2 of the cylinder.
The front face 2 of the cylinder is made with an elongated recess having its side walls beveled or undercut and this recess receives the hardened steel armor plate 8, the side edges of which are beveled to engage the beveled walls of the recess in the face plate so that said armor plate has a dovetail connection with the face plate. The armor plate 8 is made with an opening 9 in line with the plug 4 and the latter is made with an elongated recess 12 having beveled side walls 13. The recess 12 receives an armor plate 10 made of hardened steel and formed with beveled side edges 11 to engage the beveled walls of said recess 12,the armor plate 10 thus having dovetail connection with the plug. A key slot 14 is made in the armor plate. 10 to align with the key slot of the plug.
Instead of providing a dovetail recess to receive a similarly shaped armor plate as shown in Figure l, the front end of the cylinder may be provided with a dovetail enlargement 15 and the armor plate 16 for the cylinder may be made with a dovetail recess 17 to receive said enlargement, as shown in Figure 5, and the armor for the plug might be applied thereto in the same manner if desired.
By the provision of the hardened steel armor plates, access to the pin tumblers or their drivers with the use of a boring tool will effectually be prevented.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A pin tumbler lock comprising a cylinder and a plug, an elongated armor plate secured to the cylinder and. having an opening in line with the plug. and an elongated armor plate secured to the end of the plug.
2. A pin tumbler lock comprising a cylinder and a plug, and. armor plates having dovetail connection-with the front end of the cylinder and plug respectively.
3. A pin tumbler lock comprising a cylinder provided with a face plate. and plug. said face plate having an elongated recess with beveled side walls. an armor plate having beveled side edges and entering said recess, said armor plate having an opening in line with the plug. said plug having an elongated recess provided with beveled side lug. p In testimony whereof. I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
