PIN-TUMBLER LOCK.'
Application led September 15, 1921.
T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, PETER F. AUGEN- BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county" of Fairfield and State of Connecticut. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Tumbler Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pin tumbler locks and more particularly to means for safeguarding the tumblers of the sama-the object of my present invention being to provide simple and efficient armor means in the plug to prevent access to the pin tumblers by a boring tool.
With this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of the plug of a pin tumbler lock showing the application of my improvements thereto. Figure 2 is an end view. Figure 3 is a view showing the armor disks, and Figures 4, 5 and 6 are views illustrating a modified construction and arrangement of the armor disks.
The plug of a pin tumbler lock is illustrated at l and its key slot at 2.
The plug l is made with kerfs openingr at diametrically opposite portions of the plug and these kerfs are located one in front 0f the other. The kerfs above mentioned extend inwardly to the key slot and theyreceive armor disks 3 and 4 respectively, so that said armor disks will be located in the plug one in advance of the other and the inner edges of these armor disks are made irregular to conform to the contour of the key slot. Above the key slot the armor disks are formed with diagonal edges 5-6 which are approximately in line with each other when said armor disks are assembled in the plug.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July il, 4922.
Serial No. 500,832.
The armor disks 3 4 are made of hardened steel and instead of disposing them vertically, one in advance of the other, as illustrated in Figures l and 2. they may be disposed horizontally, one in advance of the other and when so located (as in Figures 4 and 5) the armor disks may have the shape illustrated at 3a and 4"l Figure 6. It will be observed by reference to Figure 5 that the lower portion of the upper armor disk 3a overlaps the plane of the upper portion of the lower armor disk 4a. vWhen the horizontally disposed armor disks are employed, the lower disk 4n will be provided with a Slot 7 to conform to the contour of the keyslot 2 of the plug and the lower edge of the upper armor` disk 3 will be notched as at l8 for the accommodation of the upper portion of the key-slot.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
'1. A plug for a pin tumbler lock provided therein with hardened armor disks located one in advance of another.
2. A plug for a pin tumbler lock provided therein with hardened armor disks located one in advance of another and entering said plug alternately from dia-metrically opposite portions thereof.
3. A plug for a pin tumbler lock provided therein with hardened armor disks located one in advance of another, each of said armor disks having portions conforming to portions of the key-slot of said plug.
4. A plug for a pin tumbler lock provided therein with vertically disposed hardened armor disks, one in advance of another and each having an inner edge portion to conform to the contour of portions of the keyslot of said plug.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER F. AUGENBRAUN.
