PIN-TUMIBLER LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1922.
Application filed September 2, 1921. Serial No. 497,896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PETER F. Ancien- BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfieldamd State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improve ments in Pin-Tumbler Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of'the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in cylinder locks of the pin tumbler type, the object being to provide means for preventing access to the pin tumblers by boring through the outer face of the cylinder or through the plug carried by the cylinder, and it consists in the details of construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in transverse section of the cylinder and plug taken through the reinforcing armor thereon. Figure 2 is a view in side elevation partly in section of the same. Figures 3 and 4 are detached views of the armor plates, and Figures 5 and 6 are views of modifications.
6 represents a cylinder of the ordinary pin tumbler lock and 9 is the plug mounted in the cylinder and free to turn therein, the plug being designed for connection with the bolt actuating mechanism of the lock and provided with a slot for the entrance of the key for actuating the tumblers to release the plug whereby the latter may be turned.
The cylinder and plug are made of a metal which will not rust and which is con sequently comparatively soft, hence to prevent the possibility of access to the tumbler pins or their drivers, 1 form a kerf 5 in the cylinder 6 immediately in rear of the escutcheon or face plate 7 and in front of the tumbler pin holes, and insert therein a hardened steel-plate 8. This kerf or slot 5 is preferably formed by a rotating disk cutting tool, such as a saw, of greater diameter than the cylinder, and extends down close to the plug 9, so that approximately the whole of that part of the front face of the cylinder in advance of the tumbler pins and their drivers, is slotted to receive the steel plate 8 which is shaped to fill the said slot. I
in by friction, or for holding .slot 12 in the plug and prevents access to the ])1I1S or tumblers through the plug.
With this construction the pins are fully protected from outside attacks through the front end of the cylinder or the plug.
The armor in the plug may also be forced into position and held by friction or mav be held in place in any other approved manner.
This construction of protective armor is exceedingly simple to manufacture and apply to the lock, and absolutely prevents a boring tool entered from the front from reaching any of the pins.
Instead of locating the armor plates in the cylinder and plug in front of the pin holes, they may be located between two pins or pin holes in each, as shown in Figure 5 and the armor plate in the plug may be made to extend down below the top part of the key slot and provided with a slot or notch 12 forming a part of the key s 0t.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A pin tumbler lock the cylinder of which is provided in rear of its front face with a slot, and a hardened steel armor plate secured in said slot and covering approximately that part of the cylinder above the plug.
2. A pin tumbler lock the cylinder of which is provided in advance of the pin tumbler holes and in rear of the front face with a slot extending from a point adjacent the top of the plug and open at the top and sides, and a hardened armor plate forced into said slot and protecting approximately that part of the cylinder above the plug.
3. In a pin tumbler lock, the combination of a cylinder and a plug mounted to turn therein, the cylinder being provided above the plug with a slot open at the sides and top, with the floor or base of the slot adjacent the top of the plug, and the plug being provided with a slot open at its sides and top with its floor or base adjacent the top of the key slot in the plug and hardened armor" plates forced into said slots whereby said armor plates are secured in place the outer edges of said plates conforming in shape and size to the shape and size of the cylinder and plug respectively.
45. A pin tumbler lock comprising a cylinder and a plurr the cylinder of which is provided near a pm tumbler hole thereof and in rear of the front end of the cylinder, with a segmental saw kerf having dimensions approximately equalling the dimensions of a cross-section of that portion of the cylinder which is above the plug of the lock, and a segmental hardened armor plate filling said kerf and tightly fittingthe same.
5. A pin tumbler lock comprising a cylinder and a plug, said cylinder having a segmental kerf in rear of the front end thereof and adjacent to a pin tumbler hole thereof, said kerf having dimensions approximately equalling the dimensions of a cross-section of that portion ofthe cylinder which is above the plug, a segmental armor plate filling said kerf and tightly fitting therein and a hardened steel armor plate in the plug secured within rear of the front end thereof and adjacent to a pin tumbler hole in said plug, said last-mentioned armor plate having dimensions approximately equaling the dimensions of a crosssection of that portion of the plug which is over and adjacent to the sides of the upper portion of the key slot in said plug 6. In a pin tumbler lock, the combination with a cylinder and a plug having pin tumb bler holes, said plug having a segmental slot in rear of the front end thereof and adjacent to a pin tumbler hole therein, said slot extending over and beyond respective sides of the key slot of the plug, and a segmental hardened metal armor plate filling said slot and secured therein and having a central nlotch forming a continuation of said key S ot.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification inthe presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
