I I TrN-TUMBLEB. ock."
T 0 all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FRANK E; THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Tumbler Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to. an improvement in cylinder locks of the pin tumbler type, and is designed particularly as an improvement disclosed in U. S. Patent 87 4,808 granted to Warren H. Taylor, December 24th 1907.
In the Taylor lock, access to, or destruction of the pin tumbler is prevented by a protecting armor located within the cylinder and the plug of the lock in advance of the pins, the armor in the plug being slotted for the passage of the key.
As the cylinder and plug are generally made of comparatively soft metal,'the cost of construction is considerably increased by locating the armor in the plug in line with the key slot, and the armor is necessarily weakened by such slotting.
so locate the armor in the plug and also in the cylinder, to prevent access to the pin tumbler through an opening made by a boring tool entered through the face of the lock, without necessitating any slotting of the armor, and it consistsin the details of construction as will be'more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the lock. Figure 2 is a view in side elevation, partly in section the tumblers being removed and Figure 3 is a view in plan of the plug.
To prevent the possibility of access to the tumbler drivers or pins in the cylinder by means of a boring tool, I provide the escutcheon or face plate 5 of the cylinder 6 with an armor consisting of two hardened steel pins 7 located immediately in front of the p111 chambers, the gap or space between the pins 7 being less than the diameter of the pin drivers or tumblers, and toorestricted to permit of the entrance of a boring tool of sufficient size to destroy or damage the drivers or pins. These hardened steel pins SpecificationofLettersPatent.

App1ieation filed. September 2, 1921. Serial No. 497,894.
7 extend from the topedge of the escutcheon or face-plate 5to the top ofthe plug. The plug 8, which is provided with the usual kev slot 10, and whlch is mounted to turn in the cylinder in the well lmown manner, is also provided with the hardened steel pins 9 secured within holes located at opposite sides of the key slot, but within or overlapping the planes of the tumbler pins so as to pre vent the possibility of the entrance of a bormg to ol sufiic1ently large to destroy the tumbler pins, and particularly those at the front. In the drawings I have shown the armor or hardened steel pins 9 located in advance of the first tumbler pin and in, or overlapping the plane of one side thereof and also be tween the first and second and second and Y destroying all of the tumblers or drivers, The, object therefore of my invention is to plug and permit the latter to be turned to actuate the locking mechanism connected withthe plug.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent, is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a tumbler lock the plug of which is provided with a plurality of hardened steel pins arranged at an angle to the axis of the plug at op posite sides of the key slot and partly within the plane of the tumblers.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pin tumbler lock the plug of which is provided with a series of hardened steel pins at an angle to the axis of the plug and alternately arranged at opposite sides of the key slot and partly within the planes of the holes for the pin tumblers.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a pin tumbler lock the cylinder of which is provided with a plurality of steel pins located transversely in advance of the holes for the pin tumblers and drivers for the lat ter and in the plane of the same, and a plug having a plurality of steel pins located at an angle to the axis of the plug and at 0pposite sides of the key slot and partly ithin the planes of the holes for the pin tum- I blers.
4. As a new article of manufacture, pin tumbler lock the cylinder of which is provided with a plurality of steel pins located transversely in advance of the holes for the tumblers-and drivers for the latter and Within the planes of said holes and a plug havspecification in the presence oftwo sub- 20 scrlblng wltnesses.
