Description

P. F. AUGENBRAUN.
PIN TUMBLER LOCK. APPLICATION FILED SEPT-2,1921.
Patented July 11, 1922.
i lli fE "rates PETER E. AUGENBRf-LUN, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ,ASSIGNOIR TO THE YALE &,
TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
' rIN-TUMBLER LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1922.
Application filed September 2, 1921. Serial No. 497,897.
resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Tumbler Locks; and I do hereby de-' clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in pin tumbler locks wherein a plug which actuates the locking mechanism of the lock is mounted to rotate in the cylinder, the ob ject of the invention being to provide means for protecting the tumbler pins and their drivers from a boring tool applied to the outer face of the lock, and it consists in a cylinder having a hard metal outer facing and a plug also having an outer hard metal facing, the facing of the plug fitting within a circular opening in the facing of the cylinder.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a lock embodying my invention; Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal vertical section of the same the pin tumblers, drivers and spring for the latter being omitted; Figur 3 is a view in elevation of the face plate of the cylinder; Figure 4 is asimilar view of the face plate of the plug, and Figures 5 and 6 are views showing other embodiments of the invention.
5 represents a cylinder and 6 the plug mounted to turn in the latter in the usual and well known manner, both of said parts having holes or chambers 7 for the pin tumblers, not shown.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 4 a hardened steel armor or face plate 8 is secured to the outer face of the cylinder and conforms in size and shape to the outer end or escutcheon 9, and provided at its periphery with a flange 10 which embraces or overlaps the periphery of the escutcheon, the said armor or face plate being secured to the cylinder in any approved manner. The armor or face plate 8 is provided with an opening 11 for the reception of the outer flanged end 12 of the plug 6 and also to receive the peripheral flange 13 on the face plate 14 covering the outer end of plug 6. This face plate 14 is also made of steel or other metal sufficiently hard to resist or prevent the passage of a boring tool, and is as above explained provided with a peripheral flange 13 embracing the flange 12 of the plug and fitting closely within the opening 11 formed in the armor 8 which covers the face of the cylinder. The cylinder is counterbored to receive the flange of the plug and the flange of the plug armor 14, and the latter is provided with a key slot conforming in size and shape to the key slot 15 in the plug.
With this construction it will be seen that the outer face of both the cylinder and plug are protected by armors which prevent the tumbler pins from being destroyed orlgotten at by a boring tool from the out- SlC e.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 5, the projecting portion of the escutcheon is omitted, and the armor plate 8 is provided with a flange 8 disposed at right angles to the body of the plate and made to encircle the outer end portion of the cylinder. Fastening means 8 may be passed through the flange 8 and made to enter the cylinder.
In the construction shown in Figure 6 the peripheral portion of the armor plate 8 is bent to form a flange 8 provided with an integral annulus 8 which is seated in an annular recess 8 around the outer portion of the cylinder and may be secured to the latter by fastening means S The flanged portion of the armor thus forms a flange for the front end or escutcheon portion of the cylinder.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is:
1. A pin tumbler lock comprising a cylinder and a plug, both provided with armor plates covering their outer faces the armored face of the plug being mounted to turn in an opening formed in the armored face of the cylinder.
2. A 'pin tumbler lock comprising a cylinder and a plug, a hard metal facing for the cylinder provided with a peripheral flange embracing the outer end portion of the cylinder, and a hard metal facing for the plug provided with a peripheral flange embracing the outer flange of the plug, the flange on the facing of the plug being seated in a circular opening in the cylinder facing.
3. The combination With the cylinder of In testimony whereof, I have signed this a pin tumbler lock, of a hard metal armor specification in the presence of tWo subscribplate on the front end of said cylinder, said ing witnesses. armor plate havin a peripheral flange se PETER F.
