UNITED STATES PATENT ornce,
PETER I. AUGEN'BRAUN, 0F STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
'TIN-TUMBLER LOCK.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 19221.
Application filed September 2, 1921. Serial No. 497,900.
To all wkom it myconcem:
Be itknown that 1, PETER F. AUGENBRAUN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Tumbler Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lock structures and'more particularl to protecting means for the tumblers and rivers of pin tumbler locks, the object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means whereby the tumblers and drivers of a pin tumbler lock of ordinary construction may be protected against access of a boring tool when the lock is in position within a casing.
With this object in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Fi re 1 is a sectional view showing an embo iment of my invention. Figure 2 is a face view, and Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 are views of modifications.
In the drawings I have shown a part 1 of a device in which the lock is located and this part 1 constitutes in effect, a housing or casing for the pin tumbler lock shown at 2,- the latter comprising a cylinder 3 and a plug 4 mounted to turn therein and provided with bores to receive the tumblers and drivers of the lock. The casing 1 is provided with a recess 5 which receives the projecting portion of the face plate 6 of the lock. Beyond the front end of the lock, the casin is recessed .'forming a shoulder 7 and a ange 8. A hardened steel armor plate 9 is located in said recess in front of the lock and its peripheral portion is seated on the shoulder 7 a plug of the lock to receive a hardened steel armor plate 18 for the front end of the plug, and the wall of the opening 12 is undercut to receive a flange 14 on the armor plate 13 whereby the latter is held in place by the armor plate The armor plate 13 for the plug is provided with a key slot to align with key slot 16 of the plug.
If desired, the armor plate 9 may be secured in place by means of screws such as nd1cated at 15, the heads of such screws bemg ground ofi flush with the outer face of the armor plate, as indicated in Figure 3.
In Figure 4, the armor plate 9 is shown as being secured to the housing or casing 1, by means of hardened steel pm 16 driven through the armor plate and into sockets in the housing or casing.
Instead of securing the armor plate 9 to the housing as previously explained, I may provide grooves 17 and 18 in the armor plate and housing respectively, and insert an expans51ble snap ring 19, as indicated in Figure If desired, the armor plate 9 might be secured in the housing 1, by means of one or more spring-pressed plungers 20 seated in a socket or sockets, in the peripheral por* tion of the armor plate and adapted to enter a socket or sockets 21 in the housing, as shown in Figure 6.
With the use of my improvements,a pin tumbler lock of ordinary construction may be inserted in a casing and protected against access to its tumblers and drivers with the use of a boring tool, by hardened steel armors mounted in the front portion of the casing.
Having fully described my invention what i I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is:
1. The combination with a pin tumbler lock and a casing enclosing the same, of hardened steel armor means mounted in said casing in front of the-lock.
2. The combination with a housing and a pin tumbler lock therein, of an armor for said lock, said armor being carried by the housing.
3.; The combination with a housing and a pin tumbler lock therein, of an armor plate disposed in front of the lock, and means securing said armor plate to the housing,
4. The combination with a pin tumbler In testimonywhereof, I have signed this lock and a casing enclosing the same, of a specification in the presence of two subscribhardened steel armor supported in front of ing witnesses.
the cylinder of the look by said casing, and PETER F. AUGENBRAUN. 5 a separate hardened steel armor for the plug Witnesses:
of the lock supported by said first-mentioned CHAS. A. BERRY,
hardened steel armor. CHAS. 'Lmm.
