Abstract

196,323. Nicholson, T. A. E. June 10, 1922. Spray carburettors. - The mixing-chamber is provided with contractible flexible liners or hinged plates which merge into the walls of the mixing- chamber and form a choke tube with a gradually contracting air inlet of less length than the gradually expanding outlet. A rectangular mixing- chamber a is provided with a pair of flexible strips b, the ends c adjacent the mixture outlet sliding behind pins d, and the ends e being secured by pins f. The strips normally lie against the walls of the chamber a and are forced together by Bowden wires g. h. The fuel nozzle m is controlled by a needle valve which enters the nozzle from above, and is operated by a Bowden wire. The strips may normally take up the curved position either by their own resilience or under the action of springs, and be flattened by suitable means. The strips may be replaced by rigid plates hinged adjacent the nozzle and forced apart by a spring, or by rigid plates hinged at their inner ends and curved at the outer ends to form a flared air inlet. In modifications, the flexible strips are pressed inwards by pivoted fingers simultaneously operated by a Bowden wire or the like, or by a right and left handed threaded spindle which engages nuts secured to the outer faces of the strips. The fuel needle valve may be disposed at right-angles to the nozzle, and may be controlled simultaneously with the means for controlling the plates or strips.
