Stuffing - box joints.- Pipes are coupled together or to any element, with some amount of fexibility, by means of a packing comprising a plastic or elastic substance b, for example indiarubber, substantially closed in a malleable metal casing c, for example lead or anti-friction metal, which packing is inserted between the pipe g and the sleeve or socket a and compressed, either directly or through the medium cf a conical ring d, by a gland e. This gland has axial slits f which on tightening enable it to be forced against the socket and thus oppose slackening by vibration. The pipe has clearance in the gland and socket to give flexibility to the joint. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), states that the arrangement may be used as a stuffing-box. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
