Abstract
Minerals containing magnesium and calcium carbonates or silicates or the products obtained by roasting such minerals are treated with water, carbonic acid, and an alkali carbonate or bicarbonate at 60-70 DEG C. and the solution of magnesium-alkali carbonate or bicarbonate is separated from the insoluble residue containing the calcium carbonate, silica, alumina, iron &c., all as described in Specification 17311/14. According to the present invention, the heating of the solution of the double carbonate to cause the separation of magnesium carbonate is effected in a vacuum, the temperature mentioned being 20-35 DEG C. The magnesium carbonate precipitates in the form of tri-hydrate, MgCO3.3H2O.
