8640. Karplus, H. June 11. Lubricants for machinery.-Colloidal graphite for use as a lubricant is obtained by treating graphite with strong oxidizing-agents; the treatment is carried out at such a temperature that there is little or no formation of graphitic acid, this temperature being ascertained by previous tests, and with such proportions of oxidizing-agent that only a small percentage of the graphite is oxidized to oxides of carbon &c. The reaction mixture is then diluted with water, and the graphite is separated and repeatedly washed with water; organic non-electrolytes which decrease the surface tension of the water are preferably added to the water; amyl alcohols also are suitable. The resulting hydrosol may be stabilized by means of protective colloids.
