Hydrocarbons, cracking.-Tar, tar oils, and tar derivatives are treated for the production of light hydrocarbons, suitable for use as motor fuel, bv distilling with phosphoric acid in a finely divided state. The phosphoric acid may be introduced continuously during the operation, or may be added initially and maintained in a finely divided condition by stirring.
