Description

Process for producing black lead from molten lead in a lead oxidation kettle. The previous methods for the production of black lead are essentially based on the fact that molten lead is thrown against a baffle plate by means of a stirrer, and that the finely divided lead dust obtained in this way is oxidized to lead oxide by highly heated air, which is expediently mixed with water vapor for the purpose of heat regulation will. The complete oxidation of the metallic lead to lead oxide is, however, very difficult to carry out in practice, because the metallic lead particles surrounded by the fine lead oxide dust evade the oxidation and only reappear in the end product, insofar as they are useless for the purposes of the litharge . The improved methods of producing black lead have led to a requirement for a marketable black lead to have a lead oxide content of about 97 percent, and it is not very easy to obtain such a pure product. Even if the process for producing black lead is an exothermic one, so that heat is released, on the other hand, the complete oxidation of the lead requires a high degree of heat, so that the lead oxidation kettles, which are usually made of cast iron, are exposed to high heat and are therefore subject to great wear due to breakage and cracking. The aim of the present invention is to remedy this drawback, and this is to be done in that the heat for the oxidation of the lead, instead of supplying it from the outside through a furnace, is made inside, and this heat can be appropriately regulated. This is done in such a way that the air which is to be used for the oxidation of the lead is mixed with a corresponding amount of carbon oxide and this is caused to ignite within the lead oxidation chamber. Since the carbon dioxide counteracts the oxidation of the lead, one must of course ensure that there is always a large excess of air, because an oxidizing atmosphere is necessary to carry out the lead oxidation. It is useful to add superheated steam to the mixture of air and carbon dioxide gas, because the steam serves as a heat regulator in the oxidation of lead. If. If the carbon dioxide is washed with water for cleaning purposes before it is introduced into the lead oxidation vessel, the gas carries enough water in finely divided state with it, which evaporates in the heat, so that the water vapor to be introduced can be saved. The use of carbon dioxide gas within the lead oxidation room also has the advantage that part of the heat supplied from the outside by the furnace is saved, as the lead oxidation boiler does not have to be heated so high, which considerably reduces the risk of these expensive boilers breaking In fact, it has been shown that a kettle can be used for years in this way, whereas in the earlier method of high heating the lead kettle seldom lasted longer than six months.
