Abstract

216. Kilburn, B. E. D., [Sulzer Akt.-Ges., Geb.]. Jan. 6. Reversing; starting. - The starting compressed-air valve d and the fuel valve care worked by different pairs of cams f, g, one cam being used for each direction of running. The valve rods p carry two sets of cam bowls m, n which are adjusted by a hand-wheel s. The valves are fully opened when the index t is in the position I or II on the quadrant, but are opened to a less degree as the index moves over the graduations 3, 2, 1 beyond these positions. The valve levers u are mounted on eccentrics b so that when one valve is in action the other is out of action. Both valves are out of action when the eccentrics are in a central position and only then does interlocking mechanism, not shown, permit the reversing mechanism to be moved between the positions indicated by the marks I, II on the quadrant. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the scavenging air valve cam bowls k, l are also adjusted by the wheel s for reversing, but for regulating the opening of the fuel valve an additional linkage gear w, x, y, z is employed.
