Abstract

9217. Lehmann, H., and Hohnberg, F. April 15, 1913, [Convention date]. Recoil apparatus.-Consists in reducing recoil by causing a forwardly-moving mass to impact with stops or buffers on the recoiling gun-barrel. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 6, the mass C, which slides on the barrel, is connected by rods E to a device D mounted in front of the gun muzzle so as to be acted upon by the gases after the projectile has left the gun. Hydraulic buffers a<2> receive the impact, and oppositely-acting springs F, G mounted in the cradle B return the parts to the firing position. In a modification, the mass C is moved forwards by a spring, which is released by the lifting of a retaining-catch at the commencement of the recoil, and is re-energized during the final period of the recoil when the gun-barrel and mass C are moving rearwardly together. This construction may be combined with the first, and the buffers a<2> may be replaced by fixed stops on the gun-barrel, to which the mass C may be locked by a spring pawl at the moment of contact.
