Abstract

604,188. Automatic firearms. VERWALTUNGSGES. DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Oct. 10, 1941, No. 13111. Convention date, Oct. 23, 1940. [Class 92 (ii)] The barrel 1 and the parts connected thereto of a firearm whose breech block 7 is locked by inertia, is movably mounted and is buffered forwardly against fixed parts of the weapon and rearwardly by the recoil spring 9 of the breech block. The barrel shown is connected to a breech casing 2 and moves rearwardly against the action of a spring 10 and, when nearing its extreme positions, against springs 5, 6. The spring 9 bears against the casing 2 and is compressed initially by withdrawing the breech block until it is hooked by a lever mounted in the casing. Firing is effected by moving a trigger lever 14 mounted in the fixed housing 4, the movement serving to move inwards a rail' 11 against which bears a roller on a lever 12. This lever serves to retract a member 17 which in turn releases the hook holding the breech block. In operation forward motion of the breech block causes rearward motion of the barrel against the action of the spring 10, and after the firing of a shot the reverse action occurs and continues until the spring 9 is compressed and begins to reexpand. Preferably the barrel and parts connected thereto have a weight approximating to that of the breech block. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a modification in which the breech block is connected to forwardly extending rods serving to co-operate with a breech block recoil spring near the front of the firearm, while the recoil springs for the barrel and breech casing unit are at the rear. In another modification external recoil springs for the breech block surround rods extending rearwardly from a forward part of the housing 4. Mechanism is also described for enabling the firearm to fire single shots. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
