Abstract

608,966. Automatic firearms. AKTIEBOLAGET BOFORS. Nov. 19, 1945, No. 31078. Convention date, Feb. 7, 1942. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] A feed and ramming arrangement for an automatic firearm having its magazine located above a charging bridge 5 from which bridge a cartridge is pushed by an automatically operating rammer 18 into the breech is characterised by the provision of two successively operating feed-down mechanisms, one of which feeds the lowermost cartridge on to the bridge during recoil, while the other advances the remaining cartridges by one step during run-out. The charging bridge shown recoils with the barrel and has grooves which serve to rock a pair of levers 22, 23, the other ends of which serve respectively to cause vertical oscillations to the feed-down arms 21 and 31. Arm 21 carries elements 20 which yield outwardly when arm 21 ascends, but which urge the cartridges downwardly when arm 21 descends, the lowermost cartridge being urged past wheels 28 on a shaft 29, which can yield outwardly against the force of a spring-actuated piston 50, and coming to rest on supports 26, 27. These supports yield outwardly when an element 30 on arm 31 moves downwardly to feed the round on to the bridge. From the bridge the round is moved to the breech chamber 13 by the ears 39 on upwardly extending forked arms of the rammer, the latter having a part encircling a bar 15 which carries the rammer spring 16. The rammer is taken to its rear position after a shot is fired by pivoted members on the bridge and is temporarily held in the retracted position by a pawl lever 17 pivoted to a spring- controlled pivoted lever 52. The round, when being rammed, passes over the front pivoted section 7 of the bridge and into the chamber 13, the breech-block 2 then moving upwardly to its closed position and the round being fired. The breech-block in rising engages a catch 36 whose function is to engage the section 7, as shown in Fig. 1a, so that the section serves as a guide for the empty cartridge case. Abutments 59 and 38 on the receiver 3 serve to hold the catch in releasing positions at appropriate times. Specification 398,081 is referred to.
