Open-hearth furnaces. -An oil-fired furnace for smelting &c. has a central feed - shaft a, which serves as an outlet for the combustion products, and is surrounded by the burner nozzles b, the axes of which are inclined inwards and laterally. Vertical movement of the flames is thus induced. A single burner, having its axis inclined in the same way, may be used.
