Abstract

107,211. Grote, L., and Vivian, A. W. H. April 19, 1916. Open-hearth furnaces; glass furnaces.-In a furnace for melting glass and other materials, the flames and hot gases from a plurality of burners are caused to take a whirling or cyclonic motion in superposed layers within the furnace. As shown, the burners are placed in openings 3 and the gases are withdrawn from the furnace through openings 6 in the side walls near the curved end. The openings 3 and 6 are shown all on the same level, but they are preferably arranged at different levels, so that the burner on one side and the corresponding outlet on the other side are in a plane higher or lower than the other burner and outlet.
