Coke ovens.-A vertical coke oven is heated by superposed pairs of horizontal flues so connected to the gas and air supplies that the current through each pair of flues can he reversed. The flues L, M are formed in the walls between the ovens and are connected in pairs by damper-controlled openings at the end remote from the vertical gas-supply flues J, K and the regenerator N. Each flue L is connected with a gas-supply flue K and a regenerative chamber N<2>, while each flue M is similarly connected to a gas flue J and a chamber N<1>. By suitably operating the .gas supply and the regenerator reversing valves, the currents of heating gas can be directed through the pairs of flues in either direction. The regenerator comprises a tunnel N divided by transverse walls into chambers connected alternately to one or other of two flues P, P', which, by dampers P<3>, P<4>, P<5>, P<6>, can be put into communication either with the atmosphere or the chimney. Dampers are provided to control the chimney draught and the communication between the regenerative chambers and the flues P, P<1>.
