Abstract
348,225. Gas-fired tunnel kilns. DANIELS, J., 28, Wandastrasse, Essen, Germany. Feb. 17, 1930, No. 5259. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii).] In a tunnel kiln having gas and air regenerators along its side walls, the gas and air discharge ports alternate with one another, and are sufficiently close to produce a continuous band or strip of flame. The regenerator chambers are arranged along the length of the tunnel at both sides with pairs of gas chambers 11, Fig 3, alternating with pairs of air chambers 12. At their lower ends each pair of chambers is in communication with a common inlet and outlet flue 13, and at its upper end each chamber leads to a distributing flue 15 or 16 connected to gas and air ports in the walls of the tunnel by the flues 17, 18. These ports alternate and produce a sheet or strip of flame, along the length of the tunnel. Control of the heating is effected by dampers 19 on the flues 17, 18. In a modification, Figs. 4, 5 and 10, the regenerators are narrower, and are connected directly to the wall ports. Preferably each regenerator supplies three ports, one through the downcast 18, Fig. 10, and the other two through a flue 29, which is bent around the flue 18 of the adjacent regenerator, so that the alternation of gas and air ports is maintained. The regenerators are connected at their lower ends in groups of two or more by the flues 25, but if desired individual inlet connections 27. may be provided. Rich gas may be supplied for combustion through pipes 32 in the walls between the regenerators, and an air valve 34 is fitted to each pipe so that air can be admitted for burning out carbon deposits. Control is effected by dampers 20, 26 at the upper and lower ends, respectively, of the regenerators.
