Abstract

7250. Augenbraun, P. F. March 26. Latches, sliding; cases; preventing operation. -The outside knob follower of a latch can be secured against operation by a thumb-turn on the inside and released by a lock located in the outer knob. A finger 25 on the thumbturn is adapted to operate a bell-crank 24, the arm 21 of which can engage a notch 22 in the outer follower 8, Figs. 2 and 3. When so engaged, a pin 29 secured to the arm 21 is brought into the path of a cam 31 on a follower 12 with which the lock connecting-bar 32 is in engagement, so that the follower 8 is released when the lock 33 is operated by the key. On then turning the knob to withdraw the latch, the end 5 of the latch rod 4 impinges against a finger 31 on the lock follower 12 and returns this to the normal position and allows the bellcrank to re-engage the follower 8 under the action of its spring 20. The follower 8 is always secured unless released by the thumb-turn 25. The latch bolt 2 is mounted on a plate 6 secured centrally within the casing. The bolt rods 4 have terminal heads 5 and pass through lugs 5 fixed on the plate 6 and through loose plates 7 on which the followers 8, 8 are adapted to bear to withdraw the bolt. To assist in holding the parts in position, the heads 5 have extensions bearing on one side of the plate 6, and the plates 7 are connected by a yoke 7, Fig. 6, located on the other side of the plate 6. Two extra rods 4 are rigidly connected to the plates 7 and carry springs 11 compressed between the ends of the rods and the lugs 5. A lever 19, held inoperative when the door is open by an extension 17 of a slide 3 engaging a pin 18 thereon, is allowed to fall behind the bolt when the door is shut and the slide 3 pressed in. When either follower is turned to withdraw the bolt, a projection 19b on the yoke 7 raises the lever 19 out of engagement. The lock follower 12 and the stop mechanism 21 are also mounted on the plate 6, so that with the exception of the knob followers 8, 8 which are journaled in the outer and inner plates of the casing, the whole of the mechanism can easily be removed.
