Abstract

712. Beesley, F. Jan. 9. Breech actions, drop-down barrel.-Relates to the firing-locks of under-and-over guns of the kind in which one hammer is hung to swing under its pivot while the other swings, in the usual way, over its pivot, and consists in combining with both locks, (1) rebounding mainsprings, (2) pivoted cams for compressing the passive sides of the mainsprings, and (3) sears for controlling the cams. The cams are operated by thrust-rods when the gun is opened. Fig. 1 shows an underhung lock with the tumbler L cocked, but the mainspring not compressed by the thrust-rod I and pivoted cam N. Fig. 2 shows the position of the thrust-rod I and cam N when the gun is closed. The sear 0 limits the forward movement of the cam N and thrust - rod I, when the gun is opened without the trigger having been pulled, to prevent the nose of the thrust-rod from taking up a position in which it releases the ejector, which is described in Specification 22,513/13. Collars Q, Fig. 2, are provided around the holes for the pivots of the hammers and sears as distancepieces to keep these parts away from the lockplates. The cam may be mounted to turn about the same axis as the tumbler, as shown in Fig. 7. In order to bring the strikers into the central line of the gun, the tumbler axles L<2>, Fig. 12, may be extended through the bridlepieces R, separate hammers S being keyed on to these extensions. Specification 31/80 is referred to.
