Abstract

29,157. Ges. zur Verwertung von Feuerwaffen Patenten. Dec. 18, 1911, [Convention date]. [Addition to 24,129/11.] Breech-actions, sliding breech-block.-Relates to guns of the kind described in the parent Specification in which an auxiliary spring is provided which opposes a great resistance to the initial recoil of the breech-block, and subsequently aids the recoil, and consists (1) in mounting the spring between a long arm and a short arm of a pair of two-armed levers pivoted to the gun casing, the short arm of the first lever being directly operated by the recoiling breech-block, and the long arm of the second lever being permanently pivoted to the rear-end of the breech-block, the arrangement being such that the first lever is released from the breech-block after a short recoil during which the spring is stressed, and is held in its released position by a pawl, thereby enabling the stressed auxiliary spring to aid the further recoil movement, (2) in providing means whereby the movement of the first lever cocks the percussion hammer, and (3) in means for permitting the gun to fire single shots or automatically. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the breech-block 4 carries a spring pawl 9, which engages the short arm of a lever 2 pivoted to the gun casing at 13. The auxiliary spring 14 is arranged between the long arm of this lever and the short arm of a second lever 1 pivoted to the casing at 17, the long arm of the lever 1 being joined by a link 18 to the breech-block 4 and controlled by a spring 3 fixed to the casing. At the commencement of the recoil, the pawl 9 rotates the lever 2 and stresses the spring 14 until the pawl slips off the end of the lever. A pawl 19 on the casing then holds the lever in its released position and enables the stressed spring 14, through the lever 1 and link 18, to assist further recoil until the breech - block strikes a stop 32 and, through the link 33, releases the pawl 19. The breech-block is then returned by the spring 3, but the spring 14 is held slightly stressed by a pawl 31 until the breech pawl 9 re-engages the lever 2; the spring 14 then presses the breech-block firmly against the barrel 5. The lever 2 carries an arm 20, which, on recoil, rotates the lever 21 and cocks the hammer 23. The sear 25 is disengaged by pull on the trigger transmitted through a rod 28. To allow of continuous firing when the trigger is kept pulled, a second pawl 29 operated by the movements of the breech pawl 9 engages the hammer. This pawl 29 is tripped automatically each time the breech-block returns to the closing position. At the instant of firing, the hammer 23 prevents rotation of the pawl 9, and a secure locking of the breech is ensured.
