Abstract

163,054. Hamilton, B. T. Dec. 11, 1916. Ordnance design; breech mechanism.- The rear barrel G of a non-recoil gun is mounted by screwthreads F<2> in a swinging carrier F so that, by rotating the rear barrel in the carrier, the seal between the front and rear barrels is broken, further rotation causing the carrier and rear barrel to swing aside about the axis of the eccentric shaft E to disengage a rib F<1> on the carrier from a recess in the breech-piece B. The rear barrel carries an operating-handle H which, after the unscrewing movement, becomes latched to the carrier so that the same handle serves for swinging the carrier aside. During this swinging movement, an extractor L acts on the cartridge case J and the firing-pin N is cocked into engagement with a sear N<2> by links R<1>, R connected to the shaft E and acting on a lever Q. The lever Q has a finger-piece Q<1 >for re-cocking by hand in case of a miss-fire. On inserting a fresh cartridge, a stud J<1 >on the case enters a recess A<1> in the breech-chamber to ensure correct location of the percussion cap opposite the firing-pin N. The cartridge, after insertion, is retained by a spring bolt M', and is forced home when the breech is closed by a reverse operation of the handle H, The trigger mechanism, which swings with the carrier, comprises a trigger T<4> connected by a sliding bolt T<3> to the lower end T<2> of a rocking- lever, the upper end I of which swings into a recess S<3> in a sliding firing-rod S when the breech is closed. The hand-lever H has an arcuate projection H<4> which prevents rearward movement of the rod S to release the sear except when the breech is closed and locked. The trigger may be locked against movement by a rotary bolt T<6>.
