Abstract

7960. Kasley, A. T. April 2. Plant; working-fluid supply. -A combustion-product turbine 15 and a steam turbine 16 are mounted upon a shaft 31. A centrifugal fan 33 subjects air and gas to an initial compression. The air and gas are led by pipes 38, 39 to valves 43, and the mixture is admitted successively through cam-operated lift valves 23 to four combustion chambers, two only of which, 11, 13, are shown in Fig. 1. Each valve 43 reciprocates in unison with the corresponding valve 23, thereby periodically cutting- off the supply. Also, the valves 43 may be rotated by a speed governor 63, thereby governing the amount, or, if desired, the quality of the charges. The charges in the combustion chambers are exploded successively. Pipes 28 lead from the combustion chambers to a rotary distributing-valve 17, which in itself forms the turbine casing. The valve 17 is so provided with nozzles and passages that the products of combustion of each combustion chamber are drawn off in three stages through three successive nozzles and directed upon the turbine wheel. After doing work upon the turbine, the fluid drawn from the combustion chamber during the third stages passes to the exhaust, that from the second stage is passed into a second combustion chamber to compress the charge therein, and that from the first stage to a third combustion chamber to compress the charge therein to a higher degree of compression. It wifl be noted that after a charge enters a combustion chamber, it is initially compressed by the explosion in a second chamber, and then finally compressed by the explosion in a third chamber. The charge is then fired, and the products of combustion are drawn off in three stages as described above. A water-jacket 18 surrounds the combustion chambers and forms a steam-generator for the steam turbine 16.
