Abstract

179,829. Klauder, W. May 18, 1921. Working-fluid supply. - Steam from a water jacket a is used to scavenge in turn four combustion chambers p after explosion has taken place; the steam becomes superheated and then mixes with the combustion products in an annular chamber m, from whence the mixture passes through nozzles u to turbine blades c, g. The turbine shaft f is connected by a 4: 1 gear to a cam-shaft h, giving one explosion per turbine revolution. Air is compressed into a chamber c by a pump z; liquid fuel is pumped to an annular chamber 5 by a pump y; and steam from the jacket, after compression, passes to a chamber 10. Cams act successively to give the following cycle for each chamber in turn; compressed air flows in, then liquid fuel is forced in; ports 8 are opened and simultaneously ignition takes place; the gases expand into the chamber m, steam is admitted to the chamber p, from whence it expands into the chamber m and mixes with the gases to form a uniform mixture, which actuates the turbine rotor. Cooling parts.-The turbine casing is watercooled, and a ventilator disc 1, keyed on the turbine shaft f, produces an air current for cooling the interior of the turbine.
