Abstract

15,040. Larson, E. E. June 27. Fixed-abutment type; cooling-parts; working- fluid supply.-A rotary gas - engine of the hinged-vane type comprises a hollow drum 10 mounted on a spider 8 and carrying cam-guided hinged vanes 12 which project alternately into a combustion chamber 3. Situated between the two vanes are two similarly-actuated vanes 19 provided with ports for allowing the spent charges to escape into the interior of the rotor. The explosive mixture passes from a pipe 23 to the combustion chamber 3 by way of a camactuated lift valve. A steel ball 15 in each vane makes and breaks contact with the sparking- plug 35, thereby exploding the charge. As the following vane reaches the combustion chamber, the spent charge passes into the interior of the rotor. Passages 36 in the bed-plate of the engine are provided for cooling air. They communicate with a common passage leading to an external pipe 38 leading into the interior of the rotor. The cooling-air and the exhaust gases are expelled through a lateral exhaust port by the spider 8, the arms of which are fashioned as fan blades. Leakage is prevented by leaf-spring packings.
