Abstract

[Cognate Application, 29,086/10.] Jet-wheels; combined-flow type; working-fluid supply; reversing.-The rotor of a reversible internal - combustion turbine is provided with pairs of oppositely-curved impact pockets, the gases exhausting from one pocket into the other pocket of each pair. Valves 14 in combustion chambers 3 are controlled by a reversing-lever 13 to direct the gases into the pockets 4 or 4<a> of the rotor 1. Each pocket may be fitted with vanes 7, and the gases are led therefrom, by a port 5 and passage 6, to impact on the preceding pocket, whence they exhaust into chambers 7<a>. The passages 6 may be formed in the casing, or in a fixed disk, or in the rotor. Between the pockets in the rotor, chambers 9 are provided which deliver compressed air into the exhaust chambers 7<a> and into pipes 10<a>, where it mixes with fuel from pipes 10<b> for supplying the combustion chambers 3. The gas mixture may be compressed and delivered by the device shown in Fig. 2. An explosion in the chamber 3 drives a piston 17 downwards, compressing a charge of air and gas from a cylinder 16 through a valve 25 into a retaining- chamber 26, whence it is released when the ascending piston 17 opens communication between the chambers 26, 3 by a passage 15. The return upward motion of the piston 17 is produced by a cushioning-piston 23. Oil or gas is admitted to the cylinder 16 by a needle valve 19, and air is admitted by suitable ports in the cylinder. The Provisional Specification describes a different valve-gear, operated by cams on the turbine shaff, for admitting the charge from the chamber 26 to the combustion chamber 3.
