Abstract

115,319. Painter, A. E., and Painter, W. June 11, 1917. Fixed - abutment type; working-fluid supply.-The rotor 2 of a rotary internalcombustion engine carries spring-pressed axially-sliding vanes 26, 25 which cooperate respectively with fixed abutments in compression and explosion chambers formed concentrically in the stator 1. The charge is drawn by the vane 26 into the semi-circular compression chamber through passages in the hollow shaft 15 and the rotor 2, and, after compression, is delivered through passages in the rotor to the outer explosion chamber 5, where, after ignition, it acts on the vane 25 and exhausts through a port in the periphery of the stator 1. Packing-rings 7 are provided as shown, and the rotor is allowed axial play by being feathered on the shaft 15 and pressed against the stator by a yielding spring device 33. A number of engine units may drive a common shaft, and two rotor members may co-operate with a single intermediate stator member.
