Abstract

131,176. Bergasse, P. H. Aug. 27, 1918. Fixed-abutment type; balancing moving parts; cooting parts; packing drums, vanes, etc.; working-fluid supply.-A rotary internal-combustion engine comprises two or more power cylinders of the type having sliding-rocking vanes and supplied with working fluid from a rotary pump of the same type, which receives fan-compressed air delivered through the centre portion of the engine for cooling. A fan 37 at one end of the casing delivers air through the interior of three rotors to the other end of the casing, where it is conducted through a rotary valve 6 to the right-hand cylinder. Here the air is further compressed and delivered through ports in the rotary valve 6 and an adjustable sleeve 5 to passages 7 and valves 12, where it is carburetted and supplied to the other two cylinders. The compressed air from the valve 6 presses down the stem 11 of the valve 12, thereby opening needle valves N and admitting fuel supplied by a duct 13. Ignition is effected by sparking-plugs 14, and the exhaust passes out through ports 1. The sliding-rocking vanes 21 are balanced by counterweights 74, have packing members 20, 22, and rotate about fixed crank-pins 51; they protrude through rocking members 19 housed in the rotors 3, which are cut away on the explosion side of the vane to expose a greater surface of the vane. Triangular packing- rings 67 are fitted in grooves in the rotor and stator flanges 33, 34, and a ring 0 is clasped round the periphery of the rotor. The engine is started by turning a pinion p gearing with a wheel 65 secured to the rotor shaft, which transmits the drive through gearing 54, 55 to a shaft 60. Surplus air from the valve 6 may be used as a scavenging charge or stored in a reservoir for starting purposes. The portion 28 of the casing where the rotor contacts with it is made of the same curvature as the rotor.
