Abstract
10,462. Shouls, E., and Allcock, F. May 1. [Cognate Application, 15,395/11.] Working-fluid supply.-In an internal-combustion turbine, the charges of compressed mixture are ignited in the spaces between the blades, which are totally enclosed by the periphery and sides of the rotor except for the admission and exhaust ports. The rotor A is formed in one piece, and is carried on a hollow shaft C. Admission ports D and exhaust ports H in the rotor coincide during rotation with inlets F and exhaust ports I in the stator. The spaces T between the blades E are each provided with ignition plugs J, which make contact, in the example shown, with three plugs K in the stator during rotation to provide twenty-seven explosions per revolution, there being nine spaces T in the rotor. The blades E are set at an angle to the sides of the stator, and pockets R may be formed in the stator, against which the explosion mixture may react. In three spaces T, the charge is simultaneously ignited, in three others exhaust is taking place, and in the remaining three, admission is occurring, but the details may be modified to ensure an explosion simultaneously in every second chamber T instead of in every third chamber as in the example shown. The chambers T may be subdivided by auxiliary blades with connecting passages between them, and auxiliary blades may be provided in the pockets R. A water-cooling jacket L is provided in the stator.
