Abstract
227,231. K÷hler, F. Oct. 30, 1923. Working-fluid supply.-In a turbine of the type in which a runner is divided into cells from which liquid is forced by internally produced combustion gases to drive the wheel, the recesses of the cell walls through which the gases are introduced or escape are so arranged that they are covered by liquid during the compression of the gas. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, two rotors 2, 3 mounted coaxially are divided into cells by vanelike partitions. Channels 8 are arranged at intervals in the casing between the rotors so as to connect the cells in pairs not in the same plane. The ends of the casing have openings 9, 9', Figs. 1 and 2, for the introduction of explosive mixture and of scavenging air. The central part of the casing has outlet ports 10 communicating with the exhaust through passages 13. Hot tube igniters 114 are arranged in ignition rings 113 and communicate with the, cells by passages 115. Liquid leaking past packing-rings 109 is received in an annular chamber 111 from which it is returned to the cells by passages 112 situated at a point where the pressure in the cells is low. An inlet 130 is connected to a liquid supply for replacing heated liquid by cold, any excess passing into the, exhaust. At the moment of explosion the liquid is as shown on the, right-hand side of Fig. 1, at such a level that it covers the inlet and outlet gaps in the cells covered by the parts 15<1>, 15 of the casing. At this moment a charge is forced into the corresponding cell in the opposite rotor, and as the cell moves away from the inlet this is compressed by the moving liquid till it reaches the explosion point. After the exploded and expanded gases have passed out through an outlet 10, a scavenging charge is forced in through a port 9<1> just before the combustible charge enters through a port 9. In a modification a single rotor is employed, the cells of which are connected by pasages 205 - - 208 in a surrounding casing.
