3751. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. Feb. 14. Field carriages.-Relates to rack-and-pinion ranging and pointing gears, of the kind wherein the two racks A<1> of the pointing-gear are attached to a part of the carriage that does not move in elevation with the gun, and the rack B<1> of the ranging-gear is attached to the cradle B, the respective pinions A<2>, B<2> being arranged so that they may be independently operated, but will move together in elevation during the pointing operation. According to the invention, the pinions A<2> are fast on a transverse shaft a carried by a bracket AX to which the sighting apparatus is connected as shown in Fig. 2, and which bracket is slidably mounted upon the racks A<1>. The shaft a is rotated by worm-gearing a<1>, a<2>. The pinion B<2> is formed on a sleeve which is rotated freely upon the shaft a by worm-gearing b<1>, b<2>.
