ARTHUR TREVOR DAWSON AND GEGRG-E rrromas BncKHerafor wnsrmrlvsrnn, VLQNDON, ENGLAND, essrenons trofirrcxnas nrmrrnn, or WESTMINS'IER, LON- DON, ENGLAND! Application filed November T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Sir ARTHUR TREVOR DAWSON, knight, and. Sir GEORGE THOMAS BUoKr-IAM, knight, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Vickers House, Broadway, /Vestminster, in the county of London, England, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in, or Relating to following is a specifisight and the gun so as to correct for an advanclng or a receding target. this dlfferential gearing being also operated by the pointing gear to move thegun and the sight together in keeping the sight on the target. In'this manner the vertical deflection gear remains in the same position whatever the angle of elevation of the gun may be.
In order that the said invention maybe clearly understood and readily carried into effect, we will describe the same more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: V
7 Figures 1 and 2 are elevations showing a constructional form of the invention as viewed from the left hand side and the right hand side'of the gun, and Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view of certain of the gears shown in Fig. l.
A is the guncarriage B, B are the sights,
B is the sight carrier, B the sight bracket, and B the toothed elevating are attached 'to the sight bracket. U is the double crank hand lever of the pointing gear, this gear comprising a pinion 0* carried by a shaft c Fig. 3 meshing with a toothed arc C attached to the gun cradle as is well understood. E is the hand wheel of the vertical deflection gear and E the vertical deflection dial, both the hand wheel and the dial being mountedon a bracket E attached to the gun carriage. F is the aforesaid differential gearing mounted in a casing F attached to the gun carriage.

Specification of Letters Patent. Pate fla l, Aug, 2, 1921;
11,1913. :Serial no. 262,086.
r In the example shown the pointing hand .lever C drives a shaft C operating through the bevel'wheels c, 0 (or through a worm and worm'wheel) upon the differential gearing F which is alsojoperated upon through a worm c and a worm wheel 6' by a shaft E driven from the vertical deflection hand wheel E. Leading from the said dilferential' gearing is a shaft F carrying a worm f meshing with the sight elevatin'giarc p WlllChlS 1n the form of a worm wheel seg- 'ment- The said elevating arc is thus moved by the pointing hand lever U and b the vertical deflection hand wheel E either independently or simultaneously as the case may be. The worm G (Fig. 3) is the worm ofthe ranging gear, this worm meshing with a worm wheel G with which, and with the shaft c and a worm wheel 0. driven by the worm c* of the pointing gear, is associated a differential gear G r j i G (Fig. 1) isthe handwheel of the ranging gear and G (Fig. 1) is thedial of'this gear. It willbe understood'that the ranging gear operates through the differential gear G to elevate the gun with respect to the V sight.
' Letters Patent of the United. States is :r
1. In ordnance, the combination with the gun, the gun carriage and the sight, of point-,
111?; gear for elevating the-gun and the sight together, ranglng gearfor elevating the gun with respect to the sight and means-additional to said rangim and ointing e'ars ahd mounted on the carriagefor correcting the sight line in a vertical plane for an advancing or receding target.
2. In ordnance, the combination withthe gun, the gun carriage, the sight, the pointing gear for elevating the gun and the sighttogether, and the ranging gear for elevating thegun with respect to the sight, of means 7 additional to said ranging and pointing gears and mounted on the carriage for efl'ecting relative movement in elevation between the sight and the gun to correct for an advancing. or a receding target anddifferential gearing operated by said means and also by the pointing gear.
3. In ordnance, the combination with the gun, the gun carriage, thesight, the pointing 1 gear for elevating the gun and the sight toadditional to said ranging and pointing gears and mounted on the carriage for moving the sight in'elevation with respect to the gun to correct for anadvancing or a receding target and differential gearing operated by said means and also by the pointing gear.
4 In ordnance, the combination With the gun, the gun cradle, the gun carriage, the sight and the pointing gear for elevating the 10 gun and the sight together, of a vertical deileetion Operating device mounted in a fixed position on the carriage, a rotary shaft, means whereby rotation of said shaft adjusts the sight in elevation and difierential gearing interposed between said device and said 15 shaft and also between said pointing gear and said shaft.
