Abstract

15,309. Schneider, E. June 30. O r d n a n c e breech mechanism.-Relates to obturators mounted independently of t h e breech-block, and consists in connecting the obturator to the breech by mechanism which withdraws both t h e breech - block and the obturator from the breech by a single operation. Figs. 1 and 3 show the invention as applied to a gun with a transversely - sliding breech-block. The shaft d, actuated by the crank d<1>, carries a partially toothed wheel d<2> meshing with the rack a<1> on the breech-block a, and a sector d' adapted to mesh with the sector c<3> on the shaft c<2> on which the metal obturator c and its steel cushion c' are pivoted. A rotation of the crank d' in the direction of the arrow withdraws the breechblock a until the wheel d<3> ceases to gear with the rack a'; the sector d<2> then engages the sector c<3> and withdraws the obturator. Firing is effected by vent tubes, carried in a chamber f in the obturator, and ejected automatically by the forked extractor g, g<1> as it strikes a stop b<2> on the gun. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the breech-block is of the concentricscrew type, and the obturator c is pivotally mounted on two pairs of links c<4>, c<5> turning on pins c<6>, c<7> on the gun. On turning the breechactuating crank, gearing similar to that described above rotates the breech-block about its axis and opens the breech, and subsequently rotates the shaft c<7> and withdraws the obturator c.
