Abstract

10,311. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. April 25. Ordnance b r e e c h mechanism.-Relates to the wedge type in which the breech-block is operated by a crank carried on, or connected to, the axis-pin of the operating-lever, and in which the striker is cocked by a lever between which and the operating-crank an actuating - lever is interposed. According to the invention, the intermediate actuating-lever is arranged so that it may also be moved by hand to recock the striker. Figs. 3 and 7 are plans of the breechend of the gun, showing the wedge B actuated through a slot b by a block b<3X> on a crank B<3> rotated through toothed gearing by a handlever B<1> mounted on an axis-pin B<2>. During the opening of the breech, a roller b<3> on the crank B<3> actuates the upper arm C, Fig. 7, of an intermediate cocking-lever mounted upon a vertical pivot C<2>, the lower arm C<1> of the lever actuating the arm b<4> of the lever B<4> which cocks and fires the gun. The lever C<1> is arranged to be operated to recock the striker independently of the breech-opening gear, by a lanyard attached at C<1X>. The striker is held cocked, if the sear fails, by the engagement of the block b<3X> with an extension c of the lever C. The breech may be opened automatically during run-out, by the engagement of a cam on the crank axis-pin B<3x> with a pawl on the guncradle. Keyed to the upper end of the spindle B<3x> is a pinion B<1x> gearing with a pinion B<2x> on the spindle B<2>, which also carries a pinion b<2X> engaging a rack B<X> controlled by the breechclosing spring B<XX> mounted in the hand-lever B'. Fig. 11 shows a modification in which a separate recocking-lever C<X>, mounted on a pivot c<X> and engaging with the lever C<1>, is employed, the breech-actuating lever being, in this case, mounted at the upper end of the crank axis-pin B<3X>, and the axis-pin C<2> of the intermediate cocking-levers C, C' being arranged in front of the crank axis-pin.
