Field carriages; mountings.-Relates to elevating- gear in which a quick motion for loading and a slow motion for elevation is obtained by the use of segmental racks and pinions controlled from opposite sides of the gun mounting by independent worm gearing. The invention consists in arranging two floating segmental racks beneath the gun carriage, which engage with two elevating and two loading pinions mounted on transverse shafts carried by the gun mounting and gun cradle respectively. The elevating-gear is mounted on the carrriage D, and consists of a worm gear E<1> and a shaft E <Î> carrying two pinions e<Î>, which engage with teeth on the outside of two racks A<1>, which are mounted in guides A' in the cradle B. The loading-gear is mounted on the cradle B, and consists of worm gear F<1> and a shaft F<Î> carrying two pinions f<Î>, which engage with teeth on the inside of the racks A'. When the elevating-gear is operated, the pinions f<Î> being locked by the worm gear F', the cradle B and racks A' move together, but, when the gun is to be brought quickly to the loading- position, the pinions e<Î> are locked by the worm gear E<1>, and the cradle is moved relatively to the rack by operating the gear F<1>.
